Hiking, Biking and Craft Beer:

New CPI poll asks whether Denver voters live up to the city’s stereotypes

DENVER – A new public opinion survey of Denver voters asks the tough questions, finding out whether Denverites actually live up to the stereotypes about the city.

In a recent survey conducted by the nonpartisan Colorado Polling Institute (CPI), voters were asked whether in the previous year they had purchased marijuana, drank craft beer, been to Red Rocks, rode a bike, or recreated in the great outdoors.

Turns out many of the stereotypes about Denverites aren’t that far off the mark.

In the last twelve months, nearly three-quarters (72%) of Denver voters said they had hiked, biked, skied, or otherwise recreated in the mountains, while 54% had drunk a craft beer. A full 40% had gone to a concert or other event at the city-owned Red Rocks amphitheater, while 33% had purchased marijuana, and 30% had biked to work or school or for errands around town.

The poll was conducted by CPI’s bipartisan polling team of Democratic firm Aspect Strategic and Republican firm New Bridge Strategy from June 13-18 via live telephone interviews (both cell phones and landlines) and online. With a sample size of 409 registered Denver voters, the survey has a margin of error of +/- 4.85%.

“Denverites like to have fun," said Kevin Ingham of Democratic polling firm Aspect Strategic. "Few places in the country have the mix of great weather, great amenities, and great outdoors that Denver offers, and most are taking advantage of those perks."

“Denverites expressed appreciation for many things related to the outdoors - from city parks to our climate - and they are clearly taking advantage of their proximity to the mountains, with a majority of nearly every group telling us they have spent time recreating in the outdoors in the last year,” added Republican pollster Lori Weigel of New Bridge Strategy.

Younger Denverites lean into the stereotype even more than their older counterparts. A majority of voters under the age of 35 had purchased marijuana, compared to just 16% of those 55 and older. Similarly, the youngest demographic was nearly twice as likely to have imbibed a craft beer (71% of those under 35 compared to 37% of those 55+).

Outdoor recreation in the mountains was enjoyed by a majority of all age groups, but again more of those under age 35 (85%) and 35-54 (79%) had headed to the mountains to enjoy nature than those 55 and older (51%) in the last year.

Asked whether they had pets in the famously canine-friendly capitol city, 50% of Denverites said they had a dog in their household, 27% said they had a cat, while only 32% said they had a pet-free abode. Comparatively, only 20% of voters had children under 18 in their home - although parents are far more likely to have a canine (68%) or pet (81%) in their household to add to the chaos.
